I'm a man with a mission on two or three editions...

What’s with the headlines?

Is this an Easter egg? In a way. The more eagle-eyed amongst you may have recognised some of the ‘phrases’ we’ve used in our headlines. Whilst some are, well, standard headlines the vast majority are song lyrics.

In case you’re interested, here are the sources of the lyrics, along with a YouTube link to hear the song.

Home:
“This ain’t rocket science…”

A bit of hip hop to kick things off. By Amil ft Jay Z, “Heard it all” from the 2010 album “All money is legal.”

Services:
“Everything we do, we’ll do it for you…”

Pretty easy one (with a minor rewrite). It was number for 3 1/2 years in the 90s. Bryan Adams “(Everything I do) I do it for you.”

“The vital connection…”
It’s 1995, Britpop is beginning to explode, and “Connection” from Elastica’s self-titled debut album has taken more than a little inspiration from “Three Girl Rhumba” by Wire.

About:
“The voice of experience, every word…”

Obscure? A little. From the 1982 album “Too-Rye-Ay” by Dexys Midnight Runners, the line is from “Liars A to E” (which is not an indictment on our honesty).

“A piece of history…”
A very lovely little tune from The Beautiful South, the song is “There is song” from their final album, 2006’s “Superbi”.

“Where’s your head at?”
Based on a couple of Gary Numan samples, “Where’s your head at?” is from Basement Jaxx’s second album “Rooty” (2001).

“Everlasting Love”
A 60s classic, recorded a number of times but most memorably in the UK by Love Affair in 1968.

Case Studies:
“Hit me with your best shot…”

Keeping it modern and up to date (cough), from her 1980 album “Crimes of Passion”, we give you American songstress Pat Benatar with “Hit me with your best shot.”

“Step back in time…”
Yeah, we’re quoting a Kylie song. We like Kylie. One of Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s greatest pop ditties. “Step back in time” reached number 4 in 1990.

Blog:
“Words of nuance, words of skill…”

From 1981, this line is from Talking Heads spin-off group Tom Tom Club and their number 7 hit “Wordy Rappinghood.”

“I’m thinking of things…”
Slightly more up to date, Britpop’s second entry, from their album “(What’s the story) Morning Glory” from 1995, this is a line from “Roll with it” by Oasis.

Contact:
“All you have to do is call…”

No, it’s not an 80s track. It’s from the 70s this time. Written by the mighty Carole King and first appearing on her 1971 album “Tapestry”, this line is from “You’ve got a friend.”

“The kettle’s on the boil…”
Also from 1971, and the only album credited to Paul & Linda McCartney, the album’s “Ram” and the lyric’s from “Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey.”

And, finally, the headline on this page? 1983. The album is “Punch the clock” by Elvis Costello and The Attractions, the lyrics is from “Everyday I write the book.”
